Clay:
The Obituary left out his experiment with Naval
Aviation. Jim told me that he completed the primary phase of
pilot training with no difficulty, consisting of ground school
and then 100 hrs in the famous T-6, a 5000 lb., 600 hp beast
that could easily overwhelm a student and frequently did. He
told me that he DOR'd, dropped on request, and went to the
"black shoe" (surface) Navy with no regrets. Why? Because the
aviation types were all "crazy"! I can tell you that, compared
to Jim, many of them were and to me that is so typical of the
man I knew. I believe he was fond of me once I grew up and I
always had enormous respect for him regardless. God bless you
all, and welcome home, Jim.
Ellen: I have never
heard this story! Trust me, we could have written a book last
night! Condensing a man's 84 years to one page is a true
challenge! |
